INTERVIEW

Hi, Sarah! Welcome to the blog! I'm so delighted to have you here! 😃

I am SO excited to be here! Thank you for having me.

First off, would you mind sharing a little bit about yourself? Rain vs. snow, hot cocoa vs. tea, Marvel vs. DC...? 😉

Rain vs. snow? Rain! I love both, but rain more. I've always wanted to wash my hair in it. And my main character of Scarlet Moon (Jayden) is a pluviophile like me.

Tea. Hands down. I don't really like chocolate. *ducks*

Marvel vs. DC? Totally both. I read both, love both, I call my husband Captain America, my first crush was on Dick Grayson, but my first comics were Dark Horse.

What was the inspiration behind your Children of the Blood Moon series?

A couple of things. I love animals and wanted to write about people who had a special bond with animals in which they could communicate. Second, the Bible verses: 1 Corinthians 13:7-8a. And third, one scene (that actually doesn't happen until book three!) that popped into my head while I was coming up with this story. But I can't tell you what the scene is! #spoilers

Who are your top favorite characters in Scarlet Moon and Amber Eyes, and why?

 Gah. You had to go for a hard question! Okay. I love Ethan and Ryan. Guys. I love them. No spoilers... okay. Ryan has so much to lose. And his fighting spirit amazes me. Ethan is a protector to the core. And that resonates with me deeply. And the struggles they have with their dark sides punch me in the gut while I'm writing their stories.

Without any/too many spoilers, how are the stakes raised in Amber Eyes?

More than one new villain rises. Mwahahaha! New loved ones' lives are at stake, and basically, if our heroes fail, the evil that would be unleashed -- *shudders* -- would break the world.

Last question before you go: if you could meet any of your favorite authors, who would you meet, and why?

I have the pleasure of being friends with a few of my favorite published authors, but I would love to just hang out with CJ Redwine, Maggie Stiefvater, and Cornelia Funke. Their characters... the emotion in their books... I am just, yes. Just, that would be an awesome cup of chai in a coffee house that would hopefully last hours.

Sarah Addison-Fox is a New Zealand-born home-schooling mother of two who loves action-packed, clean, fantasy with strong heroines. GUEST POST: SARAH'S WRITING PROCESS

My writing process is pretty simple. When my son takes a nap in the morning, I grab my laptop, line up a can of coke, chocolate and put on some epic music.

I usually begin by reading over the last scene I wrote. Revising, and making changes, but I try not to dally too long on that. Maybe half-an-hour maximum. Then I try to get out as many words as I can before the thing (my son) needs to get up.

Sometimes I don’t get to write as long as I'd like to, "the thing" and life sometimes intercede, but I always make a commitment to write one-thousand words per day. My usual writing spot is in the dining room, on the couch, with only my dog for company. I'm a shocker for starting to write then losing myself in the story. Quite often I'll check the clock to find it's waaay past lunchtime and I haven't gotten dressed or cleaned my teeth!

My gorgeous daughter is most obliging and is usually doing her school work while I write (we homeschool), and since my husband works crazy shifts, and is mostly gone during the mornings, it works really well for our family.

I do get more writing time in the evenings when my husband works, but I have to put a limit on that because if I write too late, my brain gets wired and I don't sleep! No fun when "the thing" wakes at 6AM, and you didn't get to sleep until 2AM thinking about plot bunnies!

I don't spend too much time researching. That's something I do on my phone when I'm away from my laptop. If I do get stuck on something while writing, I’m fairly disciplined about looking something up if I need it and hopping off the internet. It's so easy to fall down rabbit holes and get lost looking at swords, parkour, forges, etc. All good fun, but all suck away the limited amount of time in the day I have.

If the words aren't flowing freely, my default is dialogue. A scene can always be fixed later. Descriptions can be added later. But it's the dialogue that moves a scene to where I need it to go. I call it bare bones writing. It still counts towards the word count even though the writing is minimal, and it’s much easier to flesh a scene out afterwards.

My writing day typically looks like this:

9.30 am: Drink first can of coke. (Caffeine takes approx. 30 mins to jump start my system)

10-11AM: "The thing" goes to bed. Clear the area of all remaining family members. Daughter to room. Husband to gym (if he's home).

11-1PM: Revise for thirty minutes, write till get to one-thousand words, taking breaks to check "the thing" is okay, while drinking another can of coke and trying not to consume all the chocolate.

7PM: Revise for thirty minutes. Write as much as possible. Leave self a note on what needs to happen in the scene. Yesterday when I finished writing I left this note to myself: steel capped boots, broken ribs. It's enough to make me remember where I was heading with my train of thought, and really helpful if I was interrupted before I could wind up a scene.

I don't always leave myself notes, and I don't always follow them. I am a die-hard "panster", so every when I do have something in mind, I often change it as I let the characters lead me.

I'm pretty regimented with my system. But it's a good formula that must work since I've finished eight first drafts this way.

It's really just revise, write, repeat.

Simple. Just like me.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR


Rebekah grew up surrounded by family members who appreciated and read good literature. First, she fell in love with the stories her parents read aloud to her from the Bible and books like The Chronicles of Narnia, Great Expectations, The Hobbit, and Anne of Green Gables. After learning to read on her own, she discovered other fantastic books which helped to build her ever growing imagination.

She completed her first written work at the tender age of eight and now uses it to humble herself whenever the need arises. The story did serve to show her that God had given her a desire to write, however, and from that moment on Rebekah has never looked back or regretted picking up her pencil and becoming an author.

This nineteen-year-old homeschool graduate lives in rainy, western Washington and is currently working on receiving her BA in English in order to further her passion for creating worlds on paper.
