OCTOBER // Blog Tour, Interview, Sneak Peek, & Giveaway

HULLO, DRAGON-FRIENDS!

Today, I'm absolutely ecstatic to be featuring author J. Grace Pennington on the blog, sharing her book October! October (properly titled, given its release month; don't you think? 😉) releases tomorrow, and I've got an interview, excerpt, and giveaway to share with y'all! But first...

ABOUT THE BOOK

For Emily Baxter, life is simple. Her world is made up completely of school, church, and the community in the small farming town she calls home. All that changes one fateful Sunday, when a new girl shows up at Pleasanton Baptist -- a girl unlike anyone Emily has ever seen. A girl with long red hair, crystal green eyes, and style and posture like royalty.

A girl named October.

The months that follow are filled with magic -- the magic of ordinary things, of finding pictures in the stars, of imagination and a new sense of beauty. But as time goes by, Emily begins to sense that her enchanting new friend may have secrets that could break the spell. Is October really all she seems to be?

INTERVIEW

Hi, J. Grace! Welcome to the blog; I'm so very excited to have you here! Would you mind introducing yourself? Favorite holidays, fairytales, fandoms...?

Hello! Thank you for having me.

Let's see... I'm twenty-seven years old, and I live in Texas in a one-bedroom second story apartment with my husband and lots and lots of plush pandas. Twenty of them, to be exact. My favorite holiday is far and away Christmas -- cliché, I know, but I can't help it. It's the best time of year. Favorite fairytales would probably be Beauty and the Beast and Rumpelstiltskin (I'm a sucker for the Beauty and the Beast story archetype in general) and my fandoms are many: Pixar, Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, Pirates of the Caribbean, Myst, etc. Other facts -- I eat too much Chick-fil-a, enjoy knitting and crochet, and can't ride a bike.

What was the first spark of inspiration for October? How did you know that this was a story you needed to write?

I started writing it about five years ago. I was thinking about some things that were going on in my life and the lives of others that I knew, things that I was dealing with, and I began theorizing what it would be like to weave these people and topics into a story -- a fictional story based on real people and real issues. The idea took hold, and it came together from there. I wanted to tell a story that was real, in a way that nothing else I'd written was. Something that people could read and see truth in.

Are you a plotter or a pantser? (Or a planster? 😉) Do you have an outlining process? If so, how would you describe it?

I would say planster! I do have an outlining process -- when I start a new book I divide it into twelve parts and base each part loosely off the One Year Adventure Novel curriculum outline. Then I write a very basic summary of each part, then I make up the details and fill in the blanks as I go along. October was a little different, because I started it with certain scenes in my head, so I wrote a bunch of scenes and then later strung them together. But I still eventually went over it and used the same twelve-part structure to guide me in pulling it into a full story.

You indie publish, right? What does your publishing process typically look like?

Correct! After I finish the first draft, I usually get a few people to read it and give me feedback, then I do a complete rewrite -- chuck some things, add others, rearrange sections, polish prose. After that I do a few more runthroughs, then I pay someone to edit it. After that I tweak it a bit more and send it off to my formatter. Meanwhile, I hire a cover designer -- or in this case, I got my sister to do it, because she's terribly talented and her skills were perfect for what the book needed. When all the files are ready I upload the files to Kindle Direct Publishing and CreateSpace and prepare the release!

Thank you so much for your time, J. Grace! Last question, before you go: what advice do you have for young and currently unpublished authors?

The main advice I always have for aspiring authors is to just keep writing. I know it sounds obvious, but so many writers don't carry their stories to completion simply because they give up somewhere along the way. Writing is hard. Publishing is harder. It takes hard work and dedication, and no matter how many formulas or ideas you have or how inspired you are, the vast majority of your career is going to be sitting in a chair putting one word after another even though you feel unmotivated and generally convinced that you're going to fail. When that happens -- put one word after another anyway. You can edit anything but a blank page, so just write. Write until you have something you're excited to share with the rest of the world.

Thank you for having me!

Thank you for the interview, J. Grace! 💜

EXCERPT

The first time I saw October Blake, I was sitting in the front right pew of the Pleasanton First Baptist church, where we always sat, watching as people filed into the sanctuary. The rich organ tones of 'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus resonated through the chamber under the magic of Ms. Hendrix's wrinkled fingers. Soft chatter and friendly greetings mingled with the tune. Stained-glass windows cast rainbows across the scene.

October fit the setting better than anyone I had seen enter. She didn't walk in, she glided, moving over the gray carpet with a grace that held the eye. Her thick red hair was piled up on her head like something out of an Anne of Green Gables movie, her skin almost porcelain, her eyes a pale, crystal green visible from across the sanctuary. A ruffled cream blouse left her arms bare, and a floor-length green skirt swished as she slipped down the aisle.

I watched -- stared is a better word -- as she found her way to the third pew from the front center. She laid a hand on the back of it, then turned to look at the people behind her. I hadn't noticed until then that Mr. and Mrs. Rivers were there, shuffling to adjoining seats. She didn't seem to belong to them. But then, she didn't seem to belong to anything about Pleasanton. Pleasanton consisted of farms, fields, and stores reluctant to move into the twenty-first century, with a little brick high school and long, hot summers. This girl seemed more fitted to lilac and lace and the smell of old books with long, beautiful words in them.

THE RISE OF AREDOR // Relaunch Tour, Interview, Excerpt, & Giveaway

SO I TOTALLY MISSED WRITING A POST LAST SATURDAY AND I AM SO SORRY. Test week had just ended, there was a church event I had to attend, there was a book signing I really wanted to go to, and so BASICALLY LIFE JUST TOOK OVER. #rude

But, on the plus side, I got to meet and hang out with a certain lovely author (Lord willing, more on the book signing in tomorrow's September Highlights 🙂), and have a little bit of breathing room on Sunday before school started up again. 😸

Anywhozens, on to the real reason why I'm with y'all this Friday! 🎉🎉

Today, I am positively thrilled to be sharing The Rise of Aredor and The Wildcat of Braeton, both books by author Claire M. Banschbach! You might've heard of these already, as they've each been out for a couple years... but now they're officially being relaunched, with splendid cover touch-ups and re-edits! I'm proud to present...

THE RISE OF AREDOR

--
Book I
--

Lost in a foreign land and separated from his family, Corin does his best to survive as a slave in the household of a Calorin lord. With newfound friends he fights for survival in ambushes and wars. For one act of bravery, he is awarded his freedom and returns to a home that has been invaded and ravaged by the Calorin armies. When Corin sets foot on Aredor's shores, he has one goal in mind: find his family. He is driven into the forest, where he is reunited with childhood friends. From the shelter of the woods, they begin a spirited rebellion against Corin's former cruel master, who now holds sway over Aredor. Follow Corin's path in his quest to free his imprisoned brother, find a father who has vanished, and ultimately free his country in The Rise of Aredor.

THE WILDCAT OF BRAETON

The Rise of Aredor, Book II

His term of service to Lord Rishdah now complete, Aiden returns to his home in Braeton. As he travels he hears rumors that trouble plagues Braeton. Clan Canich is being attacked from within. He arrives, determined to save his father, his brothers, and his Clan from the treachery of one man.

A year has passed since the Calorins were driven from Aredor and Corin is struggling to rebuild his country. Despite the peace, a fear haunts him that the Calorins aren’t far away. The Hawk Flight takes to the forest again to defend the borders against a possible attack from the neighboring country of Durna and its Calorin ally.

As Aiden and Corin struggle to adapt to their new lives they know one thing for certain -- war is coming to the North!

INTERVIEW

Hi, Claire! Welcome to the blog! I'm so terribly thrilled to have you here! First off, would you mind sharing a little bit about yourself? Hobbies; personality; coffee, cocoa, or tea?
Hi! I'm so excited to be here! I qualify as an INFP, but really I'm a giant dork who laughs at everything and hopes something incredibly epic will happen every day. I'm also a pediatric physical therapist, so the humor level of a five-year-old helps there. 😉 My hobbies are basically reading and recently attempting to embroider stockings for my nieces and nephews (I said dork, right?). And I don't really drink hot drinks. So very un-writerly of me. But I do enjoy iced tea.
Have you always been a storyteller? How did you get into writing?
I guess I'd never really thought of myself as a storyteller when I was younger, but I did like coming up with little short stories. I think we have a few written down somewhere. And I've always been a daydreamer. I credit getting into writing with the release of the LOTR movies and some very poorly written fanfiction.
From where did the first spark of inspiration for The Rise of Aredor come?
I've always loved Narnia, and The Horse and His Boy is still my favorite book, so it kind of kickstarted the inspiration for the story. It took a year or two of living the adventures in my head before I realized that I could make up my own world and characters and thus began the story.
If you could pick a favorite character from your series, who would it be and why?
So there's another question really similar to this in another interview, so I'll give a different answer, because I actually have several favorites. Mera is one of the secondary characters and becomes a love interest in the second book. She's a healer and has a quiet, no nonsense way about her. And she and her lucky guy are adorable together, just saying. 🙂
Thank you so much for your time, Claire! Would you mind sharing a short snippet from The Rise of Aredor, before you go?
Thank you so much for having me! Absolutely! And for this snippet, Corin goes by Hamíd during his time in Calorin.
EXCERPT
"Emeth, bring the stallion!" Lord Rishdah called.

The guard with the double swords took the reigns from the son and led the horse over. The stallion was limping badly on his right front foot and, as it came closer, Hamíd saw the ragged edge of the hoof and small cuts littering its leg.

"His shoe came loose and he went and tore it off. Fell and cut his leg up a bit too," Emeth explained.

Hamíd spared a brief nod as he went up to the horse to better examine it. He ran a hand down its leg and the stallion shied away. Hamíd caught at its bridle and stroked its forehead in reassurance.

"Hey now, easy, boy. You're in no shape to be dancing around like that," he murmured in his own tongue. The stallion snorted, gradually settling down as he continued to talk gently to it.

"He likes you. He usually doesn't settle down that easy."

Hamíd jerked his head up in surprise. Emeth had spoken Rhyddan, the northern tongue. He saw now that Emeth was fair-skinned like him, with wavy black hair and sparkling green eyes.

"You are far from home." Hamíd broke free from his initial shock.

"I could say the same for you." Questions were evident in Emeth's words.

Hamíd risked a glance at Balkor. The anger in the lord's face promised punishment later. Hamíd turned back to the horse and reverted to Calorin, "If you'll bring him to the forge, sir, I'll take care of him there."

EXILES // Weekend Release Blitz, Interview, Sneak Peek, & Giveaway

GREETINGS, MY FANTABULOUS DRAGON FRENS. Today, I'm positively thrilled to be sharing with y'all an interview and sneak peek -- oh, and a giveaway, too! -- in celebration of Exiles, by Jaye L. Knight!

ABOUT THE BOOK

That cover, though! 😻

Book IV of The Ilyon Chronicles

Exiled after their defeat in Samara, the Resistance struggles to find allies in their quest to restore King Balen to his throne and put an end to the emperor’s tyranny. When the Crete people refuse to lend their aid, Balen leads a group to Dorland to reason with them and win their support. However, enemies prove to be everywhere, and they find themselves in a fight to keep Dorland from becoming Daican's latest conquest.

Back in Landale, the arrival of a new enemy forces Trask and Anne to tread more carefully than ever. Tensions are rising, and the enemy is determined to test Anne’s loyalty and root out the location of Trask and the Resistance once and for all.

Feeling trapped within the walls of Valcré, Prince Daniel must contend with an ever-eroding relationship with his father. As their clashes escalate, the situation becomes potentially life threatening when his loyalty is called into question. His sister seems bent on branding him a traitor and actively seeking to condemn him to the fate of those put to death in their father's new arena. Daniel is certain his father would never execute his only son and heir but, with other forces at work, it might not be that simple.

One small misstep could prove fatal for all.

HAVE YET TO DISCOVER THE WORLD OF ILYON?

EXCERPT

Trask's forehead pinched, his jaw twitching, but then a mischievous little light kindled in his eyes and lifted the corners of his mouth. "I could kidnap you."

"What?"

"I could kidnap you and bring you out here to the forest. Goler would never have to know you came willingly."

Anne shook her head. What was it she had said about impulsive immaturity? "That would make you a fugitive and a kidnapper."

Trask shrugged and drew her a little closer. "So? Whatever it takes to protect and be with those I love."

A smile tugged at Anne's lips. Why did he have to make it sound so appealing?

"What are you thinking?" he asked.

"I’m trying to decide how romantic it is."

"Is that a yes, then?"

"No."

His face fell. "Why not?"

"Because I don't want you branded as a kidnapper. Not everyone will understand your motives."

"I don't care."

"But I do. Elôm willing, you will be Baron of Landale someday. Kidnapping wouldn't be a very flattering reputation."

Trask hung his head, and Anne couldn't hold back a soft laugh at his sulking expression. Such a little boy sometimes.

INTERVIEW

Hi, Jaye! Welcome to my blog! I must say, I am suuuuuper excited about Exiles releasing! I read the first few volumes of The Ilyon Chronicles last summer, and I absolutely adored them! 😊 First off, would you mind telling us a bit about yourself? Hobbies, personality, what you like to do when you're not writing?

Thank you for having me on your blog! I'm an almost-thirty, introverted, nerdy country girl. And probably crazy cat lady. *cuddles her three furbabies* I like to have adventures, though most of them time you'll find me in front of a computer screen. But when I do get out, I’m really into historical reenactment. I've been reenacting the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War for almost ten years now. It's definitely more than a hobby. It's more of a lifestyle and I LOVE it. Needless to say, I'm a history buff.

How did you get started writing? Have you always been a storyteller?

I started writing when I was eight. My mom is a writer as well, and I thought it looked like fun, so I tried it and never looked back. I'm not sure I'd call myself a "storyteller," more an "imaginer." Is that even a word? Spell check says it is. Anyway, I've always had a huge imagination. My middle brother and I had crazy pretend adventures when we were young. I guess all that adventure ended up transferred onto book pages. It's kind of like the grown up version of playing pretend.

{Source.}
What was the first spark of inspiration for Resistance?

The entire Ilyon Chronicles came from a spark of inspiration I had while reading Dragon Quest by Donita K. Paul. When I discovered my favorite character in that series was half-blooded, that produced the inspiration for Jace and the series grew around him.

You have quite a large fanbase for The Ilyon Chronicles, particularly for using indie publishing! Did you ever expect it to get this big? Were there any special tricks you used to market the series?

I'm still amazed at how large the fanbase is. Of course, any writer dreams of such an awesome fanbase, but it's not like I actually expected it. Just hoped, and then it happened. 🙂 I think one of the biggest things that helped with the success was that I hired someone to set up a blog tour for me when I first published Resistance. That helped reach people I didn't know yet and jumpstarted the interest in Resistance. Beyond that, I am a horrible marketer. Really terrible. But while marketing is important if you really want to do well, it's also true that good products sell themselves. I made sure to create good covers for The Ilyon Chronicles that didn't scream self-published, and I think that has made all the difference.

Thank you so much for your time, Jaye! One last question, before you go: do you have any tips or words of wisdom for unpublished authors who are prepping to take the indie route?

Continuing on from the previous question, one of my top tips is to make sure you've got a great cover. I'm going to be straight up honest and say that when I come across books in sale emails or whatever, if it's an obviously self-published cover, I won't even check it out. I know I probably miss out on good books, but there are SO many books out there to choose from. As a reader, I'm obviously going to put my time into a book with a cover that grabs me and sparks my interest. It's just a fact, and will be the same for most readers. You've got to make that first impression count, and that first impression is your cover. I mean, I've read books with awesome covers that turned out to be awful books. But it's because of that great cover that I gave them a chance. You want readers to give you that chance.
